Waste Manager – Kandahar Air Field (KAF), Afghanistan
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and committed Waste Manager to work for a leading North American Defense Contracting company within their operations on Kandahar Air Field, Afghanistan.
This job based inside the camp, the entire role is based within the wire. Life on Kandahar is not as austere as one may think; there are over 25,000 people on the base. The base itself is more like a small town and boasts various dining facilities, gyms, a nightclub, Burger King, Pizza hut, Starbucks, a hockey Rink, wireless internet and libraries etc.
The successful Waste Manager will be responsible for assisting in developing, maintaining, implementing, updating, and distributing the Solid Waste Management Plan (SWMP), and maintaining a liaison between activities on KAF and Federal, State, and local authorities on meeting their standards for CAP, storage, and disposal of HW.
You will also be responsible for:
· Enforcing regulations pertaining to the CAP, handling, and disposal of HW.
· Coordinating, inspections, and managing all aspects of installation actions regarding the handling of HW.
· Reviewing contracts for compliance with environmental regulations and policies.
· Providing technical expertise to activities.
· Notifies generating activities/units of deficiencies identified during site inspections and provides guidance as required to correct deficiencies.
· Maintaining an audit trail of HW from CAP to disposal.
· Performing annual waste characterization of each potential waste by a generating unit/activity.
· Inspecting HW operations and initiate corrective measures including recommending equipment for the handling and storage of HW.
· Signing HW manifests.
· Maintaining installation-wide declared HW inventory and provides a copy to the KAF Fire and Rescue Department.
· Attending training in accordance with KAF requirements.
· Assisting Quality Assurance and Unit Commanders/ Civilian Supervisors on their missions within KAF.
· Coordinating availability of spill response and prevention materials and emergency supplies.
· Ensuring Hazardous Waste in the KAF supply system include their respective Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs).
· Initiating processes to replace Hazardous Waste with less hazardous or non-Hazardous Waste.
· Receiving notification from the Management of Hazardous Waste disposal pick-ups at 90-day storage sites and the permitted storage area.
· Ensuring that information pertaining to new Hazardous Waste policies and procedures are communicated.
Qualifications / training
· Chartered Waste Manager in accordance with either European Union or North American Standards (desired)
· Certificate of Technical Competence - Level 4 Managing Treatment Non-Hazardous Waste in accordance with either European Union or North American Standards (essential)
· Certificate of Technical Competence - Level 4 Managing Treatment Hazardous Waste in accordance with either European Union or North American Standards (desired)
· IOSH certified (essential)
Qualifications / experience
· 10 years experience in a Waste Yard Supervisor Role
· 3 years experience in a Waste Yard Managerial role
· Knowledge of QA procedures ( ISO 9002)
· Experience in working in a Military Environment is highly desirable
· Experience in rural, harsh environment

40,000 GBP per annum - TAX FREE
Rotation of 3 months in country and 1 month out of country, this equated to 3 months paid leave a year.
